WEST VIRGINIA (WCHS) — High school athletics officials approved changes Tuesday to the state’s sports classification structure for the coming school year, moving away from a formula previously used.
The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission’s Board of Control voted 150-0 in favor of passing a proposal setting the enrollment figure for each classification in the state, and in a separate vote determined what sports would utilize the four-class structure as opposed to a three-class model.
The approved proposal states that each member high school shall be classified as either AAAA, AAA, AA or A based on the total enrollment figures of grades 9-12 based from the West Virginia Department of Education, according to a news release.
Below are the enrollment totals that will determine the reclassification for the 2025-26 academic year:
* Class AAAA – 1,050 or more
* Class AAA – 625 to 1,049
* Class AA – 351 to 624
* Class A – 350 or less
The enrollment figures will be calculated at the start of the second school month of the year preceding classification, the news release said.
The change moves away from a model that was used in 2024-25 that considered enrollment, location and economics as part of the classification formula.
Sports utilizing the four-class structure will be volleyball, football, cheerleading, girls basketball, boys basketball, baseball and softball.
Golf, cross country, soccer, wrestling, tennis and track will compete under three classes: Class AAAA, Class AAA and Class AA/A.
Participants in swimming will compete without a designated classification.
The WVSSAC Board of Control is composed of principals or designees from all secondary schools in the state.
