Giant Seaport food hall the Tin Building by Jean-Georges is going to be scaling back its operations because it’s not making enough money. Crain’s New York reports that, during a recent earnings calls, landlord Seaport Entertainment Group Inc. shared that it had a “$33 million loss” for the Tin Building in 2024. So now it’s going to revamp the food hall to help save money. That means closing one of the two commissary kitchens and shuttering one of the lesser-frequented food stalls.
The Tin Building opened in 2022, led by celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and cost close to $200 million to build out. Earlier in January, the Tin Building laid off 100 workers after conducting employment authorization checks, as reported by Gothamist. Seaport Entertainment Group is also the landlord behind the development’s new pop-up-turned-ginormous restaurant Gitano and the forthcoming New York location of immersive art installation Meow Wolf. Many New York food halls have been shuttering or changing recently: the Market Line, Gotham West Market, and Canal Street Market have closed; Urbanspace Union Square closed to become a Time Out Market location in the fall; and Citizens Market recently closed for redevelopment.
Two Manhattan waterfront restaurants reopen for spring season
Yes, New York will get consistently better weather. So two of Manhattan’s seasonal restaurants — Central Park Boathouse and seafood restaurant Grand Banks in Tribeca— set their spring reopening dates for the 2025 alfresco dining season. Central Park Boathouse reopened earlier on April 2 and will run through October. And then Grand Banks, an oyster bar on an actual wooden sailboat, is reopening on Monday, April 14. Grand Banks co-owners and brothers Alex and Miles Pincus are working on opening a new bar, the Yacht Club, in Chelsea this year.
Pizza series continues
Anthony Mangieri of the esteemed pizzeria Una Pizza Napoletana is back with his series called Una Night Only, in which he invites chefs, artists, and others to create the special pizza on the evening’s menu. Next up is Saturday, April 12, with Quang “Q” Nguyen and Dina Fan of Demo on the Lower East Side. Other chefs include Rich Torrisi of Torrisi on Thursday, May 1; Kwame Onwuachi of Tatiana on Friday, May 16; and Victoria Blamey of the soon-to-close Blanca on June 14. Tickets are announced on Instagram.
Una Night Only launched in 2024, has brought together renowned chefs from around the country to collaborate on a specialty pizza. Mangieri tells Eater he’s hosting them to give chefs a chance to get out of their own kitchens, to connect, and enjoy themselves in a low-lift event that emphasizes community and camaraderie.
