Coeur d’Alene police offer workshops on online safety for kids

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – Coeur d’Alene Police are asking for help identifying a man who allegedly made inappropriate comments to an 11-year-old girl and attempted to grab her arm Sunday morning. The girl escaped and found safety at a nearby home.

This incident, CDA Police said, underscores the importance of open conversations about personal safety with children. But their priority to protect kids from enticement is from what they encounter online.

“It’s about educating parents about what their kids may be getting into,” Coeur d’Alene Police Detective Amy Knisley said. “Because every kid is online now.”

Detective Amy Knisley, part of Idaho’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, noted the challenges in keeping up with these crimes.

“We’re definitely behind the ball on it,” Knisley said. “It can be younger kids instantly thinking they are interacting with other kids. It ends up being an adult enticing them for something kids don’t even realize initially.”

She further explained the anonymity the internet provides to predators. These are people enticing children for sexual purposes, images, and to meet face-to-face. The Coeur d’Alene Police Department stressed the importance of monitoring children’s online activities – safety is paramount.

To address these issues, Coeur d’Alene Police are offering workshops this Thursday and next Thursday to educate parents about online dangers and how to keep their children safe. Both classes are at 6p.m. and capped at 40 people – details to register can be found here.
