PEORIA (25News Now) -Five years ago, the COVID-19 pandemic prompted Peoria’s St. Sharbel Maronite Catholic Church to make a major change to its annual Lebanese food festival.
It had to change from dine-in to carryout. Sunday, organizers opened their doors again so everyone to dine together,
About 1,500 people were expected to enjoy a menu that included cabbage rolls, green beans, meat pies, baked kibbeh, Lebanese salad, hummus, chicken and rice, and pita bread.
Father Bechara Awada said it is a way for the community to unite after years of isolation.
“That friendship we build, the closeness, it’s a friendship we missed for those five years, and it’s time to do it again”, said Awada.
This year’s fundraising goal is $35,000, with proceeds from the dinner going to the church.
This was the food festival’s 47th year.
