Alex Ovechkin scored two goals in Friday night’s Capitals win over the Blackhawks, tying Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894 career goals. And while he had the chance to break the record with an empty-net goal, Ovechkin didn’t want to make history that way.
Instead, he did it on Sunday against the New York Islanders, with Gretzky in the stands, scoring during a second-period power play to make history. Pandemonium ensued, and Ovechkin was congratulated by his teammates, opponents, team personnel and many more before an on-ice ceremony.
