Iowa City marks food waste prevention week with local initiatives

Iowa City is recognizing Food Waste Prevention Week from April 7 to 13, highlighting the environmental and community benefits of reducing food waste.

City officials say the goal is to raise awareness about how reducing food waste can strengthen the local community and lessen climate impacts.

According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ 2022 Iowa Material Characterization Study, about 20% of materials disposed of at the Iowa City Landfill are food waste items.

Reducing food waste helps conserve water, energy, and land resources used in food production, while also supporting local efforts to distribute surplus food to those in need.

As part of the city’s observance, residents are encouraged to explore the Love Food, Fight Waste program, a joint initiative between Table to Table and the City of Iowa City. The program offers practical tips and tools to help individuals and families reduce food waste in their daily lives.
