Videogames have given way to many a film adaptation because, like books, they already do the hard part of building out the world and characters for a story. Jared Hess’ A Minecraft Movie is the latest testament to the world of IP that provides grounds for feature films.
Before Minecraft, there were games like Super Mario Bros. and Tron, both of which led to eventual film adaptations, and in the case of Tron (1982), a followup sequel Tron: Legacy (2010) and an upcoming threequel, Tron: Ares starring Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters and many more.

‘Tron’ (1982) – Disney+
Image Credit: Everett Collection Tron (1982) was the precursor film to Tron: Legacy (2010) and the upcoming Tron: Ares, which arrives in theaters in October 2025. The original video game adaptation film starred David Warner, Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, Cindy Morgan, Barnard Hughes, Dan Shor and more.

‘Borderlands’ (2024) – Starz
Borderlands arrived in theaters in August 2024 at the end of a summer full of blockbusters at the box office.
The videogame feature adaptation stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu and Jamie Lee Curtis among others. Jack Black voices the robot Claptrap.

‘Uncharted’ (2022) – Max

The video game adaptation stars Tom Holland, Mark Wahlberg, Antonio Banderas, Tati Gabrielle, Steven Waddington and Rudy Pankow among others. The film originally went to Netflix for streaming first as of the deal with Sony, but it is now currently streaming on Max.

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ (2023) – Prime Video

Movie stars an all-star voice cast of Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Charles Martinet (the video game voice of Mario) as Mario’s dad and more.
The fully animated film arrived in theaters in 2023.

‘Tron: Legacy’ (2010) – Disney+

Starring Garrett Hedlund as Sam, son of Jeff Bridges’ Kevin Flynn, creator of the Tron world and videogame, Tron: Legacy saw Sam venture onto the grid in search for his missing father. The film also stars Beau Garrett and Olivia Wilde as Cora the Iso.
Oscar winner Cillian Murphy can be spotted very briefly in a board meeting in Tron: Legacy as well.
