The installed wind and solar energy capacity in sub-Saharan Africa grew by 16 times between 2013 and 2023, a new SEI brief shows. And that doesn’t count South Africa, which possesses more renewable energy capacity than the rest of the region combined.
SEI Research Fellow Daniel Duma and Senior Scientist Miquel Muñoz Cabré give the keys to this promising growth in their commentary for Climate Home News. These include creative investments that reduce financial risks, as well as trial and error to find strategies that help sub-Saharan African countries close their remaining gaps in electricity access.
