Seaford Officials Support Proposed Business Park and Sports Complex

SEAFORD, Del. — The Seaford Mayor and City Council offered their approval this week to a proposed 1.3 million sq. ft. business park and sports complex that would be built on the north side of the city along Route 13.

Seaford Mayor Matt MacCoy says he and other city officials are working closely with developers on an aggressive plan that is moving forward quickly.

“Any type of entertainment for families or youth, I’m in favor of,” says MacCoy. “It would open up a world of possibilities for young athletes in our area. They wouldn’t have to travel so far for those opportunities.”

MacCoy says the city and developers’ vision for a sports complex is comparable to Crown Sports Center in Fruitland, Maryland.

Many neighbors say they are in full support of the proposal.

“I think it’s amazing,” says Nick Davidson. “The main goal is promoting the community and promoting Seaford as a whole.”

But some are voicing concerns.

“Oftentimes, the idea is a lot better than the execution,” says Steven Seiler. “Things get really hyped up, and promises are made, but then those promises are not kept. The leaders need to make sure that they’re really thoughtful and that they’re engaging with the community to figure out what the community needs.”

MacCoy says planning for the project is still in the early stages. Developers say that with final approval from DelDOT, the project will take five to 10 years to complete. They say it would cost $125 to $150 million.
