The Love Chapel Food Pantry received a donation of around 40,000 pounds of food Monday morning, courtesy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The morning was spent unloading food pallets from a semi-truck into the pantry, as well onto another truck for transport to the pantry’s warehouse.
“I mean, it’s tremendous. We’re seeing unprecedented need right and we continue to see a lot of new families every month and this is a huge donation,” Kelly Daugherty, executive director of the Ecumenical Assembly of Bartholomew County Churches, said. “Basically 50,000 pounds of food is about 3 or 4 percent of everything we give out in a year so it’s a huge donation. It’ll be the largest of the year.”
The donation consisted of staples like pasta and flour, items that Daugherty said they can immediately give out. Ernest Lifferth, Public Affairs Representative with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said members donate funds that would have been spent on meals during fast to the church, which allows them to help communities and the needy on a regular basis.
Seth Grieder with Nethercutt Solutions, Inc. also came by on a forklift to assist with the unloading. As Nethercutt Solutions, Inc. is located right down the street from the food pantry, he said they see all the good things the pantry does for the community, so they are always happy to help if they need it.
“We appreciate all they’re doing for the community so this is a small token from us,” Grieder said.
