I’m An April Fools’ Baby & I’m Trying These Food Pranks On Everyone I Know

For legal purposes, I am not saying you should do any of these pranks. I’m simply letting you know that they exist. And they’re funny. And payback’s a…well, never mind.

I was born on April Fools’ Day. Ha ha, joke’s on me. Growing up, there was never a shortage of kids playing pranks on me to mark the occasion. Most notably, my sister. There was one memorable birthday when she woke me up (strike one) to tell me that my birthday was canceled because of a snowstorm (strike two). It was snowing, but my birthday was, thankfully, still on. Now that I’m an adult, it only seems fair to return the favor to those who tormented me in my younger years—on my birthday, no less—with some fun-loving, light-hearted tricks of the trade. See, I’m so nice.

Since my job revolves around food, I drew inspiration from the industry (and my youth) to determine the best pranks you can dish out to unsuspecting friends and family this April Fools’ Day. Just don’t pull any on me.

Minty Oreos

Who doesn’t love an Oreo? It’s America’s favorite sandwich cookie for a reason. Only a crazy person would turn one down. And that’s what we’re banking on for this prank. Take an Oreo, scrape out the cream filling, and replace it with toothpaste. It looks exactly the same but might give whoever bites into it a shocking surprise. At least they’ll have fresh breath!

Sweet Grilled Cheese

One of my favorite weeks on Kids Baking Championship is when they make dessert imposters. This is when you make a sweet dessert that looks like a classic savory dish and is so convincing that it could fool even Duff Goldman. Recreate a classic grilled cheese sandwich with two slices of browned pound cake, vanilla frosting, and a little bit of food coloring. Another sweet-savory fakeout idea? Spoon some yogurt on a plate in the shape of egg whites and top with half of a fresh apricot to resemble sunny-side-up eggs. There are endless ways to make your favorites out of unconventional foodstuffs.

Veggie Cake

Know anyone else with an April Fools’ birthday? Last year, my niece got me good by hiding a piece of broccoli in my birthday cake. It’s an easy, low-lift prank that thankfully doesn’t ruin the entire cake but will certainly give the person on the receiving end quite a surprise. And some vitamins!

Unspillable OJ

You know those scenes in movies where someone gets so enraged at their dinner partner that they throw their drink in their face? With this trick, you can live out that fantasy without actually getting anyone wet! I bring you the unspillable orange juice:

Simply heat 1 cup of orange juice to a simmer, then turn off the heat and sprinkle in 1 packet of gelatin. Whisk until gelatin has dissolved completely, then add 1 more cup of orange juice. Pour into a tall glass and add a straw for effect. Pop it in the fridge, and in 4 to 6 hours you’ll be able to turn the whole thing upside down nooo problem. Perfect for scaring people with white carpets or expensive electronics.

Extra-Cold Cereal

There’s nothing like starting your day with a big bowl of cereal. Prep the night before by placing a filled bowl in the freezer. The cereal will harden into the milk, making spooning a bite near impossible. Confusion will undoubtedly ensue when you serve it to your unsuspecting loved one in the morning.

Fruit Snacks

Of all of the tricks, this one is definitely the easiest. Do it for the Cadbury Egg lover in your life, and they might never forgive you. It’s pretty self-explanatory. Buy some grapes, buy some Cadbury Eggs. Remove the eggs from their wrappers and replace them with grapes. If you’re feeling nice, you could save the chocolate eggs and give them to your prank victims as a reward for putting up with you. Or, ya know, you could eat them all yourself. We won’t judge. Happy pranking!
