Rapid City food truck owners provide meals for the homeless and plan to continue this effort through the summer

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – The Black Hills Food Truck Community Feed began only a few months ago, and the event is growing in attendance each time trucks set up in Rapid City’s Market Park.

Hundreds stopped by the park on Sunday to receive free meals from food truck owners attending.

The owner of Malissa’s Frybread, Malissa Walters, started the monthly event and said her son’s basketball team feeding the homeless served as an inspiration.

“I kept saying I was gonna do it, and finally when they barricaded the bandshell I just said ‘screw it, I’m going to do it,‘” Walters said.

With the success of the community feed, Walters says she plans to expand the event, possibly providing homeless attendees with sleeping bags. She mentioned she heard about some individuals being turned away from homeless shelters in the area.

“They’re called one-nighters,” Walters explained. “People that just come and crash for the night just to stay warm. They’re starting to kick them out because the weather’s getting nicer.”

According to The Good Stuffed Food Truck Owner Jesse Lee, the community feed may continue through the summer.
