Police officer shoots man to death in James City County Food Lion parking lot

JAMES CITY — A police officer shot and killed a man in the parking lot of a Food Lion on Sunday evening in James City County.

The shooting occurred at the edge of the grocery store’s parking lot, which is on the south side of the Williamsburg Premium Outlets near Olde Towne Road. According to county police spokesman Tayleb Brooks, it happened after police tried to pull over someone believed to have been involved in a domestic altercation.

The altercation had occurred at the Lafayette Square Apartments, roughly two miles from the outlets. Police located the suspect vehicle — a green Nissan pickup — with the help of a Flock camera, Brooks said. When the suspect got out of the pickup in the Food Lion parking lot, there was an exchange of gunfire.

At least two officers were on the scene initially, Brooks said. He did not say how many officers fired or who shot the pickup driver. The state police will lead the investigation.

“At least one” officer fired, he said.

Bystanders said they heard the gunfire from across the outlets. Shoppers ducked or hurriedly got into their cars.

Dozens of officers from James City and the state police responded, taping off a large part of the parking lot. The pickup remained at the scene hours after the shooting, its interior lights on and the driver’s door ajar. The driver’s body lay on the ground as police waited for the state police’s criminal investigations unit to arrive. No one else was in the truck at the time of the shooting.

“We’re grateful our officers are OK, and no one else was injured,” Brooks said.
