The fast food culture in the United States is vast, indulgent, and, admittedly, delicious — but which states come out on top when it comes to the best fast food in the country? The number one ranked culinary school in the U.S., Escoffier, recently conducted a story to find the fast food capitals of the U.S.
The study was based on three distinct metrics: the percentage of restaurants considered “fast food,” the number of fast food restaurants per 100,000 residents, and spending on fast food as a percentage of total food spending. The study used USDA data on “limited-service restaurants” to distinguish what could count as fast food in this case.
The following states ranked top as the biggest fast food hotspots in the country:
Maryland
Maryland ranked number one as the biggest fast food hot spot in the country with a perfect composite score of 100. It had the highest percentage of fast food restaurants (about 46.76% of restaurants were considered limited-service). The state had fewer restaurants overall than the national average yet still had the third-highest number of fast food restaurants per capita. Earlier studies have shown that Chick-fil-A is the most popular fast food chain in the state with Subway, Dunkin Donuts, and Starbucks also top contenders based on different studies.
Nevada
The second biggest fast food hotspot is Nevada with a composite score of 97. It outranked Maryland with the highest percentage of fast food spending, at 21.79% or about $1 out of every $5 on fast food. The study suggests that Nevada ranks particularly high due to the large tourism economy and regular out-of-towners grabbing meals on the go.
Illinois
Illinois ranks third with a composite score of 95.7 — which is unsurprising given the state’s reputation for really good takeout items like deep-dish pizza and hot dogs. The state had a high number of fast food spending (20.49% of total food spending in the state) and the fourth-highest number of fast food restaurants per capita.
New York
The state of New York earned fourth spot with a composite score of 95.6. It boasts the second-highest number of fast food restaurants per capita and placed third in fast food spending at 20.73. The study pointed out that the tourist-to-resident ratio in New York (especially New York City) is likely why the fast food spending is so much higher than the national average.
Hawaii
The state of Hawaii ranked number five with a composite score of 94. Interestingly, Hawaii had the highest concentration of fast food restaurants in the country and the second highest fast food spending at 21.66%. Hawaii has the highest tourist-to-resident ratio in the country which likely impacts the overall results.
The sixth-highest fast food hot spot was California, with a composite score of 84. The rest of the list saw a larger dip in composite scores with Ohio ranking seventh with a score of 79, and Massachusetts following with a score of 74. New Mexico and Oklahoma ranked ninth and tenth with composite scores of 73 and 69, respectively.
