Five people, including three kids and a New Castle County Police officer, were hurt Sunday evening after a car trying to cross Route 273 (Christiana Road) near New Castle hit the officer’s patrol car, police said.
The children, whose ages were not immediately known, were ejected from the car, county police confirmed. They, along with the driver of the car, were rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.
The officer suffered non life-threatening injuries and was discharged from the hospital Sunday night, police said.
What happened?
Numerous New Castle County and Delaware State Police responded to Route 273 at Thomas Garrett Drive about 6:15 p.m. Sunday for reports of the crash.
A silver Kia Optima had crossed the grass median and hit a patrol car that was driving east on Route 273, county police said. There is a paved break in the median that allows drivers traveling west to turn left onto Thomas Garrett Drive, so police are still investigating why the car crossed where it did.
The three kids were ejected from the car, police said. County police will provide their ages and genders, as well as that of the driver, as more information becomes available.
