
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The IU Indianapolis women’s track and field team continued to kickoff the outdoor season in impressive fashion, recording 17 personal bests at Indiana State’s Pacesetter Sports Invitational on Saturday (Mar. 29). Junior Morgan Hoard highlighted efforts by breaking her own school record in the shotput with a best throw of 11.08m (36′ 4.25”), breaking her previous best mark by two feet.
On the track, the day started with Mary Fritch and Julynne Spidell both posting personal bests in the 5,000m run. Fritch placed sixth overall with a time of 19:10.03 while Spidell took 18 seconds off her prior best with a run of 19:25.41. In the 1,500m event, Grace Bragg placed seventh overall with a personal best time of 4:46.50 and Wini Barnett was 12th with a personal record time of 4:49.77. Freshman Julianna Crow also had a personal record time of 5:02.08.
Sophomore Paige Laffoon led the 100m hurdles group with a time of 14.81, taking more than a half-second off her prior best. Rookie PaShence Purnell also had a new personal best with a run of 15.23 seconds. All four Jaguar entrants in the 100m dash had new personal bests, led by freshman Jahzara McAlister’s time of 12.17 seconds. Behind her, Purnell (12.64), Skyler Sichting (13.18) and Jade Wiese (13.19) also had personal bests.
The 200m dash crew had similar fates as all four entries had personal bests led by McAlister’s time of 25.00 seconds. Journey Howard ran 26.16, Laffoon crossed at 26.77 and Jada-Marie Davis ran 27.74.
Wiese posted a new best in the long jump with a best mark of 5.18m (17′ 0”), placing 14th overall and Shelby McGee earned a top-10 finish in the javelin with a best throw of 30.06m (98-7).
The Jaguars will be back in action on Apr. 11-12 when they participate in Ball State’s We Fly Challenge in Muncie, Ind.
