The Sensory Zone debuts ‘Imagination Town’ for neurodivergent kids

MADISON (WKOW) — The Sensory Zone in Madison unveiled its new “Imagination Town” on Saturday.

Courtney Willegal is the Founder & CEO of the Sensory Zone. She said they spent months developing the new space with contractors, community businesses and families. She said they were looking to bring a realistic, immersive town experience to life.

“Where kids can be a firefighter or a salesman or a hairstylist or a banker or a vet and be able to become immersed in a community feel,” Willegal said. “For a lot of kids that have neurodiversities and that are sensory over seeking and sensory avoiding, it can get very overwhelming. So we wanted to bring a community feel here for the kids to become acquainted with and immersed in awesome.”

She said it is extremely important for kids to explore their senses through play and explore an immersive, real city.

“We live in a very sensory, overwhelming world. From the lights in the grocery store, the smells, the shopping carts that shake and to a barber chair that raises up and down, or even just having a cape around them.”
