ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) – Kids around the area gathered at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds on Saturday for Progressive Agriculture Safety Day. At the event, children participated in hands-on lessons about farm safety.
With the help of volunteers from James Madison University, participants learned about farm first aid, equipment safety and hunter safety.
Jeremy Daubert is a Dairy Extension Agent for the Virginia Farm Bureau, and he helped organize Progressive Agriculture Safety Day. He said the annual event was centered around children within the community.
”Growing up on a farm, kids are around dangerous equipment all of the time. You can see some of the large equipment here,” Daubert said. “It’s just important they understand the dangers of it at a young age so they stay out of the way, because when you’re driving the tractor, you can’t always see kids behind you or in your blind spot.”
Daubert said 75 kids from third to eighth grade attended the event.
