One of Maine’s most dominant high school players in recent years is coming back to her home state.
Lizzy Gruber is transferring to play for the University of Maine women’s basketball team for her redshirt sophomore season, the school announced Friday. Gruber, a center, spent the previous two years at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia after graduating from Gardiner Area High School.
“We are excited to welcome Lizzy back home,” coach Amy Vachon said in a statement. “Lizzy is a long, athletic and versatile player who will help us both offensively and defensively. She is an amazing young woman who will fit right into our program’s culture.”
The 6-foot-4 Gruber excelled at Gardiner, winning the Miss Maine Basketball award in 2023 as the state’s top senior. She totaled over 1,000 career points and rebounds, and holds school records for points, rebounds and blocks in a career. She totaled 20.7 points, 15.7 rebounds and 5.6 blocks per game in her senior year.
Gruber played 14 games in her freshman year at St. Joseph’s, then sat out this season as a redshirt.
