East Tennessee family steps up to help Knoxville area kids looking for a home

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Helping foster children in the Knoxville area is a full-time job for Childhelp Tennessee, a group that advocates for abused, neglected and at-risk kids.

With the help of families like the Martins though, they’re able to serve more children.

“I have two biological children, three that I have adopted out of foster care and then one foster daughter,” Amber Martin said. She lives in a packed house.

“I’ve always wanted to do this,” she said about helping kids in her community. “There are some days that are rough, but I’ve always wanted to do foster care.”

Getting involved was a quick process for the Martins.

“I get a phone call and they say ‘We have three children who need a home for you. You have 10 minutes to decide.’ I said ‘I’m on my way home, let me talk to my husband.’ We talked about it very quickly and we said yes,” she said.

It was a rewarding experience, and one that they didn’t go through alone.

“There’s always someone there, especially with Childhelp,” she said. “All of the case workers are there, so if I need help or an extra hand when I’m overwhelmed, I can all Childhelp or a case manager and they are right there to help me.”
