South Michigan food bank CEO addresses $5 million cut in food aid amid growing concerns

Nearly $5 million worth of food for Michigan food banks has been cut by the Trump Administration, according to the CEO of one of Battle Creek’s food banks.

Although that number accounts for about 4% of food distributed to Michiganders across eight counties, South Michigan Food Bank CEO Peter Vogel is hopeful the cuts won’t cause southwest Michiganders to go hungry.

Canceled meals, including products such as chicken, eggs, pork, turkey and cheese, were expected to be delivered this spring and summer.

However, according to Vogel, he only recently learned that the food was in jeopardy.

“There may be a way to be able to offset the difference in 3 or 4%,” Vogel told News Channel 3. “But if it becomes substantially bigger cuts than that, or substantially more people coming and needing food in my area, we’re going to be really limited in our ability to be able to do that.”

According to Vogel, talks of cuts to SNAP, or food stamps, and federal job cuts are worrying because they may cause an increase in the amount of people visiting food banks.

However, Vogel plans to increase fundraising efforts to combat the recent cuts.
