Shoppers race to help Blue Ridge Area Food Bank

STAUNTON, Va. (WVIR) – People running down the aisles of Kroger in Staunton may be unusual sight, but those doing so on Thursday morning were racing for a good cause.

One of those participating was Priscilla Piñeiro Jenkins, who works with the Public Defender’s Office for the area. She was selected as a celebrity participant for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank Shop to Stop Hunger event.

“You never know where you’re gonna end up in any given day,” Piñeiro Jenkins said. “I don’t need the help today, but I may need it five years from now.”

Piñeiro Jenkins said that passion to help people brought her the event, racing against the clock to provide meals to those in need.

“This is our Shop to Stop Hunger event. It’s great for the community,” said James Menees with Kroger Mid Atlantic. “It raises food and funds for those in need.”

Menees said the event may cause some disruption, but it’s well worth it.

“We’re filling up kitchen tables for families in the area,” Menees said, “which is what the most important part of the event is.”

Jenkins may not have been the winner of the competition to collect the highest dollar amount of groceries in a minute, but she did win the most spirited.

Her cheers, she said, were genuine.

“I really do care about this cause,” Piñeiro Jenkins said. “There’s so many people in our community that suffer.”
