Kids Inc. to install security for future events in response to violent altercation

In a second statement issued on Thursday, Kids, Inc. reiterated its commitment to providing a safe, supportive environment for young athletes and their families and announced security plans following a reported altercation at a Kids, Inc. event at Austin Middle School last weekend.

The incident, which involved multiple individuals during a youth sports event, prompted immediate action from the organization, which has been serving the Texas Panhandle for nearly 80 years. After a thorough review of available video footage, discussions with those present, and consultation with Amarillo Independent School District (AISD), Kids, Inc. said it identified seven individuals involved in the incident who have been permanently banned from all Kids, Inc. events, practices, games, and locations, effective immediately.

“We have a zero-tolerance policy for behavior that undermines the values of sportsmanship, respect, and community,” said an attorney statement sent on behalf of Kids, Inc. “This decision is a reflection of our unwavering commitment to providing a safe, positive, and supportive environment for the children, families, and volunteers who make up this organization.”

According to Amarillo Police Department (APD) officials, the altercation occurred inside the gym at Austin Middle School around 3 p.m. Saturday, March 22. APD responded to multiple calls reporting a fight between adults. Authorities said the incident began when one team was preparing to play while another group was still on the court. This sparked an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation.

APD officials noted that a witness provided video footage to officers at the scene. The department has filed a report, and the case is still under investigation.

“While it is truly unfortunate that the actions of a few individuals have led to this situation, we are committed to doing everything necessary to ensure the safety and security of all those involved in our programs,” the Kids, Inc. statement continued.

The statement emphasized that the actions of the individuals involved in the altercation do not reflect the values upheld by Kids, Inc. nor those of the dedicated volunteer coaches who have spent years helping local youth develop skills, character, and confidence through sports.

“For decades, members of our community have volunteered to be a part of our organization, teaching kids the value of hard work, dedication, effort, and sportsmanship,” the statement read. “The acts of these few individuals this past weekend are not representative of those who have given so much to our organization and to the children who play our sports.”

In the original news release from March 24, Kids, Inc. expressed deep regret over the incident, stressing that such behavior is completely unacceptable and goes against everything the organization stands for. “Following the incident that occurred on March 22, Kids, Inc. has worked with Amarillo Independent School District, reviewed available video footage, and discussed the incident with people who were present at the time to identify all individuals involved in this wholly unacceptable altercation,” the first statement noted.

To further address safety concerns, the Kids, Inc. Board of Directors and Executive Team also announced that security will be added to all future events.

The organization is currently in the process of securing contracts for security services, which will result in an increase in costs for participants. However, Kids, Inc. emphasized that the safety and well-being of participants and spectators is a top priority.

Kids, Inc. has been a cornerstone of the community since its founding in 1945, offering youth sports experiences that foster personal growth and positive development. Despite the challenges posed by the recent incident, the organization remains focused on its mission to serve local children and families.

“We thank our community for their continued support as we work to strengthen our programs and continue providing quality sports experiences for all youth in the area,” the statement added.
