DreamHouse charter school embarks on historic first varsity sports season

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – As high school girls flag football gets going around the state, Oahu’s mainstay schools are taking the field.

But the new sport is also introducing new schools to the scene.

Starting just six years ago, DreamHouse is one of Oahu’s newest public charter schools, and this week’s kickoff of flag football season also marked a key milestone for the school’s first-ever varsity sports program.

“To have our girls on the field, repping our name and really carrying what it means to be a DreamHouse student leader onto the OIA stage.” DreamHouse athletic director Denise Lau told Hawaii News Now.

In the past, if a student wanted to pursue a varsity sport, he or she would have to sign up with a public school in their district.

To host sports at DreamHouse, Lau surveyed students to see what peaked their interest with resounding support for basketball and girls flag football.

“All of our student activities and much of what we do at DreamHouse is rooted in student leadership and is driven by the students,” Lau said. “(Girls flag football) is a really important investment, especially in our girls, I’m so glad we’re able to give them the opportunity to get on the field as the OIA starts flag football. It’s a historic season for all of Hawaii sports.”

Na Hoku dropped their opener to Kapolei on Tuesday, but despite the final score, this team and this season will be one to remember.

“I told the girls this year will be a legacy for them, whatever we build this year will continue on for the rest of their lives and it’ll be talked about at the school forever,” DreamHouse flag football head coach Micah Ah Sui said. “We got one junior and a bunch of freshmen and sophomores. We’re battling everyday practice. It’s just a great experience for them.”

“It’s a really big thing,” DreamHouse quarterback and safety Chevelle Kane said. “I think that down here like everybody says that we don’t get a lot of looks and much stuff, but I think it’s a really good start, because our team is small we still can put in the work.”

Na Hoku continue the season on Friday with a home game against Waianae.
