JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Campaign finance reports for candidates running for office in the capital city continue to trickle in two days after the filing deadline.
According to records reviewed by WLBT on Thursday, nine more hopefuls had filed their primary pre-election reports detailing contributions and expenses ahead of the April 1 Democratic and Republican primaries.
Late filers include Marcus Cheatham (Ward 2 council), Jessica Carter (Ward 1 council), Brian Grizzell (Ward 4 council), Stephen Thompson (Ward 1), Vernon Hartley (Ward 5 council, incumbent), Jonathan Cotrell (Ward 6 council), Bruce Burton (Ward 7 council), Kenneth Gee (mayor), and Marcus Wallace (mayor).

The additional filings mean that five of the 12 Democratic hopefuls running for Jackson mayor have submitted campaign finance reports, while just one of the three Republicans had.
Marcus Wallace posted this comment on social media after our initial report on Wednesday: “To make no absolute excuse and to publicly put it out there with all honesty, I mistakenly looked at a 27th date instead of the 25th on the report document but my report was turned in, stamped and confirmed this morning.”
Records reveal that Wallace has far outpaced his other Democratic rivals, reporting $195,000 in donations for the first reporting period. However, $140,000 of that has come out of his own pocket.
Wallace’s report also seems to be somewhat incomplete, with the document including no addresses or places of employment for any of the contributors. Additionally, some donors are only listed by their first or last names, including “Auggie,” who gave $200, “Dr. Shekoni,” who gave $2,500, and “Dr. Qu,” who gave $500.
Kenneth Gee, meanwhile, reports no contributions and no disbursements.
Among city council races, Jessica Carter, a Democrat running for the Ward 1 position, has raised $3,080 and has spent $2,700, while her opponent, Stephen Thompson, has brought in $850.
Jasmine Barnes and Rhoda Barnes, two other Democrats seeking the Northeast Jackson seat currently held by Ashby Foote, have not filed. Foote and Grace Green, who are both running as independents, did not have to file primary pre-reports.
In Ward 5, campaign finance reports show Hartley has raised $1,900 for his re-election bid and has spent $1,115. Democratic opponent Charles Alexander met the filing deadline. As of Thursday morning, a second Democratic challenger, ReJohnna Brown-Mitchell, had not.
In Ward 6, two of the nine candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for the seat being vacated by Aaron Banks have now filed, with Cotrell his paperwork. So far, he has raised $1,250 and has spent $2,025.
Candidates that had still not filed included according to the City Clerk’s Office, were Lee Bernard, Lashia Brown-Thomas, Brad Davis, George Monroe, Antonio Porter, Lee Scott, and Daniel LaPatrick Walker.
Ward 2 Councilwoman Tina Clay also had not submitted her primary pre-report as of Thursday morning. Her Democratic challenger, Cheatham, submitted it the day after the March 25 deadline. He has raised $4,474.75 in his bid for the seat, nad has spent $2,243.45.
In Ward 4, Grizzell filed his paperwork on Wednesday. However, his opponent, Malcolm May still had not filed as of Thursday morning.
Finally, in Ward 7, Bruce Burton joins three other Democrats filing reports prior to the party primary. Just one Democratic hopeful seeking the position, Corinthian Sanders, has not filed. According to reports, Burton had zero contributions and zero expenses through March 25.
