A national award for military children with over 100 applicants has been won by two Eastern North Carolina kids. News12 spoke to one of them about what winning this award means.
The Military Child of the Year award is an accomplishment more than 100 kids across the country compete for.
The award acknowledges children’s efforts to be a positive influence to friends, family, and their community.
I think it’s just being able to respect the people who brought us here…and just taking that from them and bringing it to a different demographic so, the youth currently, and just giving that dedication back.
Isabella Smith is a high school student in Swansboro.
She grew up around Camp Lejeune and says she didn’t feel any different to all the other military children she see’s on a daily basis.
It felt like winning the lottery.
Now as one of the two award winners, Isabella will be going to a Gala in Washington D.C., where she’ll be awarded 10 thousand dollars and a new laptop.
But Isabella tells us she’s most excited about the people she gets to meet.
So many amazing people that have served for a really long time and really know what it’s like to sacrifice…and so I think that’ll be an insane experience, definitely once in a lifetime.
