Local art, gourmet food combine for Art & Cuisine Italian Night in Hamtramck

Food and art-lovers are in for a treat with a new Sunday event in Hamtramck. Art & Cuisine Italian Night is an immersive culinary and art experience that pairs gourmet food with local art.

The event is the brainchild of Chef Ezra Niles of Chef Me Please, Rosco Davis of Sweet Obsession Films and Stefon “Cap” McBride of Caperture Pix.

“We’re really just showcasing local talent and giving them an opportunity to showcase their work on a broader scale, while infusing it with very hand-selected cuisines and desserts, along with an award-winning film,” Davis said.

The event will feature strolling Italian food stations that allow guests to visit and interact with 13 local artists, which include a series of painters, photographers, illustrators and graphic designers, as well as live tattoo and body artists. It will also feature a screening of Davis and McBride’s short film “Date Night,” which won Best USA Romantic Short Film at the New York City International Film Festival and Short Film of the Year at the Cori Luv Show Top 12 Awards.

“It’s an incredible love story about two people who are kind of on their own self journey,” McBride said. “They kind of come across each other in the most odd way, a nice little (meet cute).”

McBride will also showcase his photography, which will feature experimental photos from his color series that focuses on drawing emotions out of his subjects using color. Work from the artists will also be available for purchase.

On the cuisine side, Niles said he is offering some of his most popular dishes, which includes pesto basil chicken and shrimp carbonara pasta with Italian wine pairings and his signature chili and lime bread. The event will also include an artisanal grazing table and ooey gooey butter cake for dessert from Chef Tolb of Tolb’s Kitchen.

Niles is a Navy veteran, whose military service took him through the Mediterranean and the Middle East where he learned diverse flavors and cooking techniques that he infuses into his contemporary American cuisine.

“When I got out of the military, I worked my way up from different concepts, from mom-and-pop [restaurants] to fine dining, from line cook to executive chef…” he said. “That’s how a lot of this kind of comes into play, as far as how I’m able to create these types of concepts.”

The event came about as a way to promote “Date Night” as well as other local artists with limited access to showcase their work.

“I feel like something like this is kind of missing in Detroit right now…” Davis said. “I just feel like something like this will open new patrons’ eyes to new filmmakers, new artists, new photographers and be a whole new experience within itself.”

The event is the follow-up to their sold-out inaugural Cinema & Cuisine evening that debuted on Feb. 22 and featured a three-course meal paired with three local films. The team plans to continue the series with a music-themed cuisine event in the works.

Niles said it will be Art & Cuisine will be a great experience.

“(People can) enjoy something new, expand (their) palettes, expand (their) horizons, and get to meet the creatives…” he said. “Overall, it’s just going to be a dope experience, just an amazing time.”
