STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) – A Statesboro mom is accused of the unthinkable, not feeding eight of her children and keeping them all in a hotel room.
That mother has been identified as 36-year-old Brittany Shannell Fields.
Stay-Plus Extended Suites off Highway 67 is where Statesboro Police responded on December 12th. Inside that hotel room, police reports reveal that eight of Fields’ children weren’t being fed, to the point that they were in danger.
This included a 14-year-old, two 12-year-olds, a 7-year-old, a 5-year-old, a 4-year-old, a 3-year-old, and a 1-year-old baby.
That warrant details, her arrest stemmed from “willfully depriving children of necessary sustenance to the extent that the children’s health or well-being is jeopardized.”
Police say they’re unsure if these are the only children Fields has though.
They arrested her on December 19th. In total, she is charged with 13 felony counts of cruelty to children in the 1st degree- deprivation of sustenance. During her arrest, she told officers she might be pregnant right now, too.
DCFS wouldn’t release any documents or say if they had interacted with Fields previously. There are a couple of law enforcement reports alleging that Fields abandoned her car at various places around Bulloch County. There is also a report detailing a fight between her and one of her sons in 2021. The report states the son was upset and got violent with his mom “when she told him he would not be getting anything for Christmas.”
We spoke with Fields’ mother, who says she has no way to contact her daughter and hasn’t spoken with her.
She did say that her grandchildren are in the care of each of their fathers.
A neighbor also shared that she saw police looking for Fields’ kids at one point—and they found one of the toddlers in the woods wearing only a diaper… She says the children would constantly be roaming up and down her street when they used to live nearby. She says she does believe Fields was pregnant the last time she saw her.
Despite the state’s opposition to any bond, Superior Court Judge Michael Muldrew granted her a $15,000 bond on various conditions, including that she have no contact with the eight kids involved. She is also not allowed to use or be around alcohol/drugs, along with no weapons or committing any other crimes.
She is only allowed contact with those children with Superior Court permission. That bond order was issued on February 11th, she bonded out on Valentine’s Day, less than two months after her arrest.
She has a public defender representing her. Her next court date is still to be determined.
