New park coming to east Lake Charles

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – With summer right around the corner, the new Anita Drive Park is providing kids in east Lake Charles with something to do.

Located at the intersection of Anita Drive and Ryder Avenue just one block south of Sixth Street, the park has a splash pad, gazebo, a senior citizens trail, and an open green space.

“Some years ago, I thought we should have something in this area for kids living in these facilities [because] they didn’t have anything and it was really nothing for them to do. So I suggested that we build a park and have a community center, which will come sometime later on,” said city councilman Rodney Geyen.

The park’s construction was funded in part by a Louisiana outdoors grant, which was about $400,000, city officials said.

City administrator John Cardone said the cost was a little over $900,000.

“This is a great project. It’s great for the City of Lake Charles, it’s great for District C. You can see it’s a beautiful park. It was designed by CSRS. We had a great contractor in Stutes Construction. They did a terrific job in putting all the amenities together,” said Cardone.

Future plans for Anita Drive Park included in the LC Rebound Bond proposal include a youth center to house the Boys and girls clubs.

Anita Drive Park is open every day from sunrise until sunset.
