How DreamPack Is Challenging Planned Obsolescence in Kids’ Backpacks

DreamPack is challenging an unspoken industry rule of unplanned obsolescence for children’s backpacks. Kids’ backpacks are mass-produced quickly and cheaply, using low-quality materials and manufacturing techniques that permit the backpacks to wear and break down quickly, necessitating frequent replacement. DreamPack has set out to provide middle-class parents with a menu of beautiful, premium-quality backpacks made from eco-friendly and durable materials and designed to last throughout their children’s years of education.

The Backpack Quandary

With a twelve-year-old and an eight-year-old, DreamPack’s founder has always enjoyed providing his children with high-quality supplies and experiences. He became frustrated when he realized not only how quickly his kids’ backpacks were wearing out but how difficult it was to find durable replacements. “I realized I couldn’t name a single premium brand for kids’ backpacks,” he says. “The only ones that came to mind were low-end, mass-market brands. Upon further research, I found that the kids’ backpack industry follows planned obsolescence—products are intentionally designed to break down quickly. I was appalled and set out to create something better, not just for my kids, but for the world.”

That isn’t hyperbole; replacing backpacks every two years contributes to the global problem of landfill waste. The founder of DreamPack set out on a dual quest: to create backpacks for children that would be both durable and ecologically conscious.

As it turned out, that was easier said than done. The best kids’ backpack manufacturers available had experience with adult backpacks but not with children’s gear. The initial kids’ backpack samples they provided to DreamPack were subpar in the quality of their materials. “We had to work closely with manufacturers for over a year to refine the prototypes,” the founder states.

Packs Built for Durability and Sustainability

DreamPack offers colors ranging from midnight to sky blue to bubblegum to ruby. The packs are made from 100% recycled nylon, repurposing materials that would have otherwise contributed to waste. This high-quality, recycled fabric is designed to last for years, reflecting the founder’s philosophy that children’s gear shouldn’t be disposable items—that “great kids deserve great backpacks, not cheaply made ones that wear out quickly,” as DreamPack’s website puts it.

The company’s backpacks also use YKK zippers, known as best-in-class because these zippers use a self-locking puller technology, making it easy to pull and lock without the zipper slipping. These zippers are less prone to getting stuck or breaking.

DreamPack also selects its manufacturers and considers each stage of the production process with the goal of minimizing its carbon footprint.

A Lifetime Warranty

Reflecting its founder’s confidence in the DreamPack design’s blend of style, durability, and comfort and in its ability to last as long as a child will need it, the company even backs its product with a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects–a rarity in kids’ backpacks. DreamPack also provides a 30-day return period with free return shipping.

The founder of DreamPack was the first to test the product out in the world. His own children took the first working samples of these backpacks with them to school, and their peers responded. “Even kids, who don’t know about fabric or zippers, could tell that DreamPack backpacks were superior in quality compared to their saggy, worn-out ones,” the founder says.
