West Virginia Falls Short to North Carolina in Second Round – West Virginia University Athletics

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 16 ranked West Virginia women’s basketball team fell to third-seeded and No. 12 North Carolina 58-47 loss inside the Carmichael Arena on Monday night in the NCAA Tournament Second Round.
 
In a defensive battle, the Mountaineers struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the game, shooting a season-low 24.1 percent from the floor. North Carolina finished the game shooting just 36.4 percent from the floor.
 
Junior guard Jordan Harrison led the Mountaineers with 10 points while notching three rebounds and two steals. Senior guard Kyah Watson finished with nine points to narrowly miss out on a double-double after a game-high 15 rebounds, marking a program tournament record. Additionally, junior guard Sydney Shaw added eight points with three steals.
 
North Carolina and the Mountaineers played to a level 12-12 score after the opening 10 minutes before the Tar Heels were able to enter halftime with a 24-21 lead. UNC outscored the Mountaineers, 21-17 in the third half before the Tar Heels added on 13 more points in the fourth quarter to hand the Mountaineers a nine-point loss.
 
The 50 wins the last two seasons are the third most in program history and the best two-year start for a head coach at West Virginia.
 
West Virginia finished the season with a 25-8 overall record. West Virginia has now won games in the NCAA Tournament in consecutive years for just the fifth time in program history and the first time since the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
