
These are the results of the monthly Marathon County Health Department business inspections for February 2025.
The following are the latest results of Marathon County Health Department inspections on licensed food establishments and other types of businesses, which the Wausau Daily Herald reports monthly.
Athens
- Cocina on the Square, 121 Alfred St.: Feb. 6: Two violations: Deli hot-hold case and walk-in cooler missing thermometers (corrected during inspection); walk-in cooler racks have build up of food residue, floor has areas with food and other debris and surface above doorway has slight mold formations.
- Rowdy’s Memory Lanes, 105 Alfred St.: Feb. 6: Two violations: Two pet dogs in food and beverage prep area; bar refrigerator not equipped with thermometer.
Mosinee
- Quality Inn, 400 Orbiting Drive: Feb. 24: Seven violations: Chemicals in laundry room stored next to boxes of coffee; soap not available at food employee handwashing sink; no single-use toweling or hand-drying device available at employee handwashing sink; no current certified food manager for establishment; no current food protection manager’s certificate posted in establishment; non-food contact surfaces of juice machine dirty and and cupboard under sink on the continental breakfast dirty with spilled syrup; plastic knives being displayed on the continental breakfast bar where food or lip contact surface could be contaminated.
Rothschild
- Econolodge, 1510 Marathon County XX: Feb. 28: One violation: Microwave provided to guests not in good repair.
Schofield
- Casa Amigos, 508 Grand Ave.: Feb. 5: Six violations: Employee working with food contact surfaces in kitchen without washing hands after handling cellphone; front of house dish machine not dispensing sanitizer; staff not monitoring sanitizer concentration in dish machine; plastic and stainless steel hotel pans with food debris and residue from inadequate washing; both employee handwashing sinks in the kitchen out of paper towel (corrected during inspection); condensation in walk-in freezer in contact with packaged food products (corrected during inspection).
Wausau
- Breakfast Bear, 227308 Shrike Ave.: Feb. 12: Two violations: Hamburgers and cheeseburgers asterisked on children’s menu, indicating it can be requested undercooked; lemon caper cream cheese in Everest kitchen prep table cooler not at proper temperature.
- Carmelo’s, 149841 Marathon County NN: Feb. 11: Five violations: Marinara sauce in walk-in cooler not at proper temperature (corrected during inspection); mechanically tenderized steaks not asterisked for menu warning; boxes of raw packaged meats stored on floor in walk-in cooler; fasteners holding clear plastic shield in ice machine rusting and need replacement; soda gun liquid waste drain line passes through bar ice bin.
- Chico’s Supper Club, 235415 Chico Road: Feb. 26: Five violations: A significant number of temperature-sensitive food items found either without date labeling, with erroneous dates or with past-due dates; sealed package of raw beef and a large cooking pot in employee handwashing sink; significant number of food items found stored in single-use retail containers originally for sour cream; ice machine interior surface shows moderate discoloration from microbial activity; exterior door in kitchen has half-inch gap along the latching side.
- Ciao, 307 Third Ave.: Feb. 11: Two violations: Dishwasher not providing proper concentration of sanitizer (corrected during inspection); wiping cloth bucket stored on top of open prep table (corrected during inspection).
- Days Inn, 225520 Rib Mountain Drive: Feb. 5: No violations.
- Great Dane Pub & Eatery, 2305 Sherman St.: Feb. 20: Eight violations: Falafel and beer batter for fish found stored at improper temperature; dish machines in the main kitchen and banquet kitchen failed to dispense chemical sanitizer on multiple attempts; soap dispenser for sole handwashing sink in banquet kitchen found not functional; staff not monitoring sanitizer concentration in kitchen dish machine; numerous food contact wares and containers were found with damage such as chips, cracks, pits and burns that render surfaces uncleanable; a significant amount of hotel pans and similar containers were found stacked and stored wet; walls of walk-in cooler contain rust formations, ice accumulations and a small amount of mold as a result of moisture seepage behind wall shared with walk-in freezer; food contact items such as cutting boards and a significant number of hotel pans found stacked in an interlocking fashion which trapped moisture within them.
- Jersey Mike’s Subs, 4720 Rib Mountain Drive: Feb. 25: One violation: Cut tomatoes not held at proper temperature.
- Jimmy John’s, 2205 Stewart Ave.: Feb. 18: Two violations: Soda fountain at the drive-thru window not maintained in good repair; water pressure in the bathroom handwash sinks needs improvement.
- Jimmy John’s, 300 N. Third St.: Feb. 18: No violations.
- Kentucky Fried Chicken, 222 Stewart Ave.: Feb. 18: Eight violations: Raw poultry not cooked to proper temperature (corrected during inspection); direct connection between sewage system and a drain from the ice bin at the drive-thru window soda fountain; person in charge not verifying that employees are achieving a proper temperature for poultry; when questioned, employees are not aware of a procedure that addresses a response to vomiting or diarrheal events; handwashing sink at the drive-thru not in working order; thermometer in the undercounter coolers not easily readable; hose connection that supplies the Bunn hot water maker leaking and causing water to pool on kitchen floor; retail food establishment permit not posted in a conspicuous area.
- Noodles & Company, 1800 Stewart Ave.: Feb. 19: Four violations: Thermometer in prep table cooler not working properly; metal and plastic dining utensils, drain pan and ice machine scoop found stored in bin with dried food debris; method for verifying heat sanitization not available at time of inspection; bins for metal and plastic dining utensils, plastic drain pans and kitchen equipment contain dried food debris accumulations.
- Oliva’s at Gulliver’s Landing, 151701 Gadwall Lane: Feb. 28: Five violations: Employee didn’t wash hands after changing gloves in kitchen; raw shell eggs stored directly on top of a container of prepared non-raw food; no test kit for monitoring sanitizer concentration in wash room; numerous kitchen bins that hold utensils and equipment contain dried food debris at bottom; exterior doors in wash room, near kitchen and at entrance have gaps along sides and/or bottom edge.
- Subway, 4300 Rib Mountain Drive: Feb. 19: 11 violations: Employee seen not washing hands after removing soiled single-use gloves and before applying new single-use gloves; sanitizer not being used according to label instructions: knife used to close and cut sandwiches not cleaned every four hours; spray bottles of sanitizer hanging from a shelf above the table where food preparation occurs (corrected during inspection); person in charge unable to demonstrate knowledge of proper sanitization methods for slash resistant gloves; food employees unaware if the establishment has procedures that address responding to vomiting or diarrheal events; no test kit for monitoring sanitizer concentrations; food prep sink dirty and used to store dirty sheet pans prior to washing; no current certified food manager for establishment; light in walk-in cooler not bright enough; expired retail food establishment permit posted.
- Subway Sandwiches & Salads, 1819 W. Stewart Ave.: Feb. 25: Four violations: Person in charge unable to demonstrate knowledge of proper sanitization methods for food prep sink; meat bane not sufficient capacity to hold foods at proper temperatures; men’s bathroom door hits the jam and is difficult to close; mops are not hung to dry between use.
- Super 8 Motel, 2006 Stewart Ave.: Feb. 26: Two violations: Sanitizer sink set up with cold water (corrected during inspection); non-food contact surfaces of homestyle refrigerator dirty.
Weston
- El Charro III Authentic Mexican Restaurant, 1711 Schofield Ave. Suite 3: Feb. 11: Two violation: Batteries dead in thermometer; grill line squeeze bottles not labeled with contents.
- Jimmy John’s, 3910 Schofield Ave.: Feb. 4: One violation: Direct connection exists between the sewage system and a drain from the drive-thru ice bin.
- Pho Zone, 4204 Schofield Ave.: Feb. 20: Five violations: Bowl and knife not sanitized after cleaning before being placed on drying rack; person in charge not monitoring the proper methods for rapidly cooling food; non-food contact surfaces of equipment and kitchen dirty; ceiling between kitchen and staircase open, exposing electrical and insulation to area where dishware, utensils and single-service items are stored; mops stored wet in mop bucket.
