In the face of food hall shutters and changes in ownership, Time Out Market prepares to open its first one in Manhattan following the debut of its Dumbo location in 2021. The second Time Out Market is in what had been Urbanspace Union Square, at 124 E. 14th Street, between Sixth and Seventh avenues, an announcement the group made last month, and set to open in the fall.
The 10,000 square-foot space with a little over 200 indoor seats will open on the ground floor of Zero Irving, the publication announced. It will have seven stalls, a bar, and a performance stage, and a 70-seat outdoor terrace. It’s the 11th Time Out Market in the world, with the first having opened in Lisbon, Portugal in 2014. The publication announced there are seven more markets slated to debut through 2027.
Urbanspace got into the food hall game in 2015 with its first location of Urbanspace Vanderbilt. The company expanded with Union Square food hall opened in December 2022. In the summer of 2023, restaurateurs Steve Hanson and Alex Gaudelet took over some of the Urbanspace’s food halls — but not this Union Square location — relaunching them under restaurant group Hospitality Firm with new vendors, such as Bash Burger from Lure Fishbar’s John McDonald; Hainan chicken spot Lou Yau Kee; and Miss Yolo’s Tacos.
The closing of this Urbanspace location is the latest of New York’s food hall shutters, from Gotham West Market to Canal Street Market and Citizens Market Hall (which is shuttering in April for a revamp as well). Perhaps the biggest one was The Market Line closing last year, inside the ambitious Essex Crossing, the Lower East Side’s 1.65 million-square-foot, $1.9 billion development project. The site is also home to longtime food vendor, Essex Market, which relocated here in 2019 and remains open.
Other food halls pushing ahead include a pan-Asian food hall opening in Long Island City and Flushing’s Golden Mall opening in the Financial District.
