
In baseball
Armstrong sweeps doubleheader. Solid pitching and solid hitting led to a pair of Trojan (2-1) wins over Oblong/Hutsonville/Palestine 15-4 and 9-3. Becket Moran, Konner Asbury, Ryan Edwards and Bowen Hesterberg combined for zero earned runs over 12 innings on the mound. Edwards added four hits and three RBI at the plate on the day, Moran had four hits and Traxton Roberts drove in four runs.
BHRA splits doubleheader. Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin (2-2) started the day with an 8-5 win over Carmi-White County in eight innings and followed it with a 9-3 loss to Robinson. Cruz Dubois shined in the Blue Devils’ win, going 4 for 4 out of the leadoff spot. Caden Keleminic pitched five innings with 11 strikeouts while allowing no earned runs. Their loss saw two more hits from Dubois and two hits and two RBI from Jaxen Spicer.
Monticello drops first game of season. There will be no 22-0 start for the Sages (2-1) this year, as they bested Murphysboro 16-2 before falling to Waterloo 6-5. Koyie Williams earned the win on the mound in the first game, going four scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Eric Arnold led the offense with two hits and four RBI, and Heyden Romano blasted a home run. Monticello led its second game 5-4 in the seventh inning before Waterloo scored two in the bottom half to walk it off. Eli Craft and Carter Foran each brought home a pair of runs in the loss.
Tuscola still searching for first win. Runs were hard to come by for the Warriors (0-4), who fell to Benton 9-3 before a 5-1 loss to Christopher-Zeigler-Royalton. Jacob Waugh and Evan Englehardt accounted for four of the team’s six total hits on the day.
In softball
Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 10, Rantoul 4. The Falcons (1-0) got the season off to a solid start with a big win over the Eagles (1-2). Despite the loss, Addy Sherrick and Bionca Walton both recorded two hits for Rantoul.
Monticello 7, Fisher 3. Seven innings pitched with eight strikeouts and zero earned runs from Cassidee Stoffel led the Sages (2-0) to victory over the Bunnies (0-1). Stoffel also had two hits, including a home run, and four RBI at the plate. Thea Key notched three hits, and Isabella Beery belted a home run.
Oakwood wins a pair. The Comets (2-2) got the day started with a bang, totaling 23 hits in their 18-3 win over Georgetown-Ridge Farm (0-3) before a hard-fought 4-1 win over Armstrong-Potomac (1-1). Irene Rangel and Samantha Dunavan each had four hits for Oakwood in game one, and Gracie Hanner and Avery Trimmell added three hits apiece, with Hanner connecting for a home run and driving in five runs. The Buffaloes got two hits from Peyton McComas. Oakwood’s second game saw Rangel strike out 13 batters in six innings while notching two hits and an RBI at the plate. Ellie Jameson and Carly Grant had the only two hits for the Trojans.
Salt Fork 8, Danville 1. This battle of Vermilion County teams ended in favor of the Storm (3-0), with Morgan Russell tossing seven innings of one-run ball while also notching a pair of hits at the plate. Ka’Leah Bellik hit a home run for the Vikings’ (1-1) lone run.
Unity wins two of three. The Rockets’ (5-1) bats came to life in their first two games of the day, leading to a 13-1 win over Clarksville Northwest and a 10-0 win over Kirkwood before a 6-1 loss to Nolensville. Danika Eisenmenger struck out the first six batters of the first game, Korina Finical did the same to three of the next four and Tatum Kirby closed the door. Lindy Bates, Grace Bickers and Kenley Harris all homered, combining for seven RBI to lead Unity’s offense. Bates and Finical combined for the shutout in game two, with Harris blasting two more home runs and Jenna Adkins and Shelby Smith each hitting one over the fence. Reese Frye connected on a homer in the third game for the Rockets’ lone run.
In girls’ soccer
Normal U-High 4, Mahomet-Seymour 1. The Bulldogs (0-1) started their season with a challenge and showed promise despite the loss. Erika Johnson scored the team’s lone goal, assisted by Ava Watkins, and Lainey Jacobs recorded nine saves in net.
In boys’ track and field
At Champaign. Numerous area teams met at the University of Illinois’ Gene Armer Invitational. Danville finished third as a team, just five placement points back of champion Mascoutah. Champaign Central took 13th, Unity tied for 18th, Urbana was 23rd, Salt Fork and Oakwood tied for 24th, Monticello finished 27th, Clinton was 28th and Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond tied for 32nd. D’Mario Jackson won the 60- and 200-meter dashes for the Vikings with respective times of 6.94 and 22.16 seconds. William Hardy won the 400 for the Maroons in 51.00 seconds, and teammate Caleb Mathias won the 800 in 2:00.07.
In girls’ track and field
At Champaign. The Gene Armer Invitational at the University of Illinois saw Danville finish 11th as a team, the highest placement of any area school. Salt Fork tied for 16th, Villa Grove placed 20th, Urbana was 23rd and Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond took 27th. Samantha Brown cleared a Vikings indoor-record 10 feet, 8 inches to win the pole vault, and Evalice Callison‘s mark of 5 feet, 3 inches won the high jump for the Blue Devils.
At Bloomington. A handful of area teams competed in the Clinton Last Chance indoor meet at Illinois Wesleyan University. Centennial won the 3,200-meter relay with Farah Scott, Sofia Tziraki, Kaylee Sweikar and Alaina Kimble in 9 minutes, 57.01 seconds, the only event win for any area school.
