SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Ozarks Food Harvest and the Ozarks Trail Council are kicking off a special food donation program this weekend.
Some Springfield residents may have noticed hangers on their door Saturday afternoon. The hangers were placed by scouts participating in the Scouting for Food program.
The scouts will be returning to neighborhoods with door hangers next Saturday, March 29. They ask those who wish to donate to place a bag of non-perishable food on their porch by 8 a.m.
Jordan Browning, communications director from Ozarks Food Harvest, says the organization is mainly looking for protein donations.
“We’re going to be looking for shelf stable items and primarily protein is one of the best because that’s one of the most expensive items for us to get a hold of,” Browning said. “So anything like tuna, canned chicken, any kind of beans, things like that. Those dry products are really great and they’re shelf stable, so not only is it going to be good for when they’re picking it up, but it’s going to allow it for much easier distribution on our end.”
Browning says the program has been a great success in the past.
“We’ve been doing this for more than 30 years with Scouting America and it’s been a great partnership because it not only is helping the scouts learn more about food insecurity in their area, it’s helping them get involved to give something back to their community,” Browning said. “That’s really what the whole mission of the scouts is all about. It’s a great partnership for us because we’re getting food that we need into the hands of families facing hunger.”
If you didn’t get a door hanger, you can still donate. Ozarks Trail Council and Ozarks Food Harvest are accepting donations at the following locations and times:
- March 22nd-29th at the Ozark Trails Council, 1616 South Eastgate Avenue. Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. or Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
- Ozarks Food Harvest, 2810 North Cedarbrook Ave. Donation drop-off is directly off Packer Road. Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m.-12 p.m.
