Forsyth multi-sport athlete TaMarkus Holmes is known for his speed on whatever playing surface he’s participating on.
But when he was home alone and smelled smoke coming from his sister’s room, only to open the door and find it in flames, he ran so fast out of his house that he didn’t even have time to put on his shoes.
“It was spreading so fast, and there was so much smoke,” Holmes said. “I just left.”
Holmes’ childhood home burned down on Friday at around 6:30 p.m. His family was OK, but their cat didn’t survive. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
The small Forsyth community is currently rallying around the standout junior and his family to make sure they’re taken care of.
“The support from the community has been great,” Holmes said. “Everyone’s been donating clothes and helping me out. Lots of people have offered me a place to stay.”
A GoFundMe has been launched and has already received over $8,000. Funds will go to the Holmes family as they try to replace all of their belongings.
Holmes was among the area’s top rushers in 2024, running for 1,339 yards and 19 touchdowns for the Panthers football team. He was also a standout guard for the basketball team. He also runs track and field.
