Over 90 teams of kids take over UNL’s Cook Pavilion for Lego League Championships

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Robotics and Legos. The two have combined themselves for the first Lego League Championship.

Ninety teams of kids ages nine to 14 have taken over the Cook Pavilion at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Rec center for the event. The event is in its second year at UNL. It’s put on by Nebraska 4-H.

The teams of kids work to solve robotics challenges using high-tech Legos. The goal is for the youth to develop and showcase skills in STEM while also exploring career paths.

In the pavilion, different businesses and organizations are showcasing robotics and how they’re used in different careers.

The main event is the coliseum arena. There, the teams have to accomplish certain tasks using the Lego robot they built. They’re being judged on that as well as other tasks the group must compete.

Teamwork is the name of the game though as participants must be in at least teams of two.

“As we, as adults, have found in life that sometimes it’s hard to work with others, especially if they don’t maybe agree with you, right,” said Brady Schulze, 4-H Youth Development, UNL Extension. “And so this already at this young age is already instilling into them how to overcome those challenges, how to work with others.”

The event continues on Saturday and is open to the public. The winners of the competition will go to Texas for the world championships.
