COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) — Teams competed on the streets in downtown Columbia on Saturday for the 12th annual Fire Truck Pull, an event benefiting Curing Kids Cancer.
The fundraiser, hosted by the Columbia-Richland Fire Department, challenged participants to pull a 14-ton fire engine 50 feet in the fastest time.
Held on Hampton Street between Main and Assembly, the event supports pediatric cancer research.
“This event always brings a lot of fun to the city every spring, and our members are proud to support it,” said Columbia-Richland Fire Chief Aubrey D. Jenkins. “Not only is it a thrilling competition, but it also shows support for area kids who are fighting for their lives each day.”
Donations from the competition will fund research at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital-Midlands.
“For families helping their child survive a cancer diagnosis, every breakthrough in research is crucial and brings hope,” Co-founder and president of Curing Kids Cancer, Grainne Owen said. “We are so grateful to the Columbia-Richland Fire Department and all the wonderful, enthusiastic teams who support this event and give ‘our’ children the priceless gift of hope.”
Last year’s event raised more than $21,000 for pediatric cancer research. Curing Kids Cancer has given the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital a $1.2 million endowment.
