In the initial reports, it was revealed that the new movie series “harkens back to the original Capcom game’s horror roots.” With the movie being directed by Zach Cregger, who famously worked on the horror hit “Barbarian,” there is hope that this new reboot might be what fans have been asking for.

Interestingly, the reboot is already making quick work of not only having a Sep. 26, 2026 release date, but the reboot might have found its lead.

According to Deadline, Austin Abrams is being targeted to lead the new “Resident Evil” film series. Though he has not signed on fully yet, he is in talks to be cast as the lead.

“The WME-repped Abrams is also known for playing Ethan Lewis on HBO’s Euphoria. Sony had no comment,” the report reads.

Abrams is known for his role in the HBO smash hit, “Euphoria,” but he is also in the AppleTV+ film, “Wolfs,” starring alongside George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

Though details on the new “Resident Evil” film series are sparse, it would be believed that Abrams could have been cast as either Chris Redfield or Leon Kennedy.

Both Redfield and Kennedy are mainstays of the “Resident Evil” video game franchise and are both fan-favorite characters among fans. If the new reboot is true to sticking true to the games, either character being the lead in the new movies would make perfect sense.

The premise of the original video game is Special Tactics and Rescue Service (STARS) is called into action to investigate a happening in Racoon City. That happening is humans being turned into flesh-eating zombies.

Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Albert Wesker head to a mansion and start to uncover a deep plot of virus creation at the hands of the Umbrella Corporation.

The original movies starred Milla Jovovich as a character named Alice, who never appeared in the games. Though certain characters from the video games appeared in the live-action movies like Jill Valentine and Albert Wesker, the storylines for the original movies just didn’t quite add up to fans of the video games.

Now, this new reboot has a chance to be a hit among fans.
