SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – Prosecutors have formally charged the woman who is accused of driving around a Penn-Harris-Madison school bus and nearly hitting two kids who were trying to board it.
23-year-old Shau-Ri Sparkle Rae Rose has been charged with two felony counts of criminal recklessness. Prosecutors say she is not currently in custody, and a warrant has been issued for her arrest.
According to St. Joseph County police, Rose took responsibility by contacting the police department, and they say she is fully cooperating with the investigation.
The incident happened back on Tuesday morning on Ash Road near Osceola. Video of the incident, which was captured by the mother of the kids through a Ring doorbell camera, went viral on social media.
In the video, you can see the two kids, a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old, were about to board the bus when a car drove onto the shoulder, on the side where kids enter the bus, and passed the bus directly in front of the two kids.
According to charging documents, Rose immediately identified herself as the driver during an interview with police on Friday.
She reportedly said she was taking her son to daycare at the time of the incident and had turned around to tell him to get back in his car seat after he unstrapped himself from it. She then told investigators that the bus was stopped by the time she turned back around, and that she had to drive around the bus because she was unable to stop and her brakes weren’t working well.
After seeing the video of the incident on social media, Rose allegedly told police she tried to call them but was unsuccessful. Police later noticed two outgoing phone calls to the St. Joseph County Police Department after going through her call records.
