A mass shooting happened at Young Park in Las Cruces, New Mexico Friday night at an unsanctioned car show, police officials said.

Officers were called just after 10 p.m. to reports of gunfire and gunshot victims near the parking lot of Young Park.

The altercation escalated to gunfire between the two groups, officials said.

Las Cruces police chief Jeremy Story said there was some “type of ill will” between the two parties before the car show.

He said multiple people had weapons at the event which then led to the exchange of fire.

People were injured in the crossfire.

When officers arrived on scene they found multiple victims with gunshot wounds.

Police officials said there are images circulating on social media of a man holding an AR-15, officials said they have questioned the man on the photos and police believe he was not involved in the shooting.

The chief said casings have been located throughout the parking lot.

“All casings found so far are handgun caliber casings. There are no rifle casings consisting of an AK or AR-style rifle,” said Story.

The department said the victims were transported to local hospitals, including the University Medical Center in El Paso.

Police are still trying to identify the suspect or suspects in this case. Police said they are following active leads.

Officials said there were about 200 people at the event.

Today we mourn a tragic senseless event that happened in our city last night,” said Las Cruces Mayor Eric Enriquez. “It’s a day for our community. There is no place for violence in our community.
