COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – There’s an activity from the Junior Master Gardener program that will be fun and informative for kids.
“We know kids are so often times outside but very infrequently do they really pay attention to the nature that surrounds them,” said Truett Marrs with Texas A&M AgriLife.
Marrs says the tree community activity is an easy way to change that.
“It’s basically a way to get kids outside and sort of pay more attention to the living things that surround them,” he said.
All you need is colored pencils and a piece of paper. A magnifying glass is also optional.
“You just take your kid or classroom outside. You pay really close attention to the different living factors in the tree and have them draw it and write it down,” said Marrs.
“If they notice any worms in the dirt or any squirrels crawling through the trees or you know the nuts, the bark or the leaves,” he said. “It gets them to pay more close attention to the nature that surrounds them and the different micro ecosystems that could be in their back yard. If you’d like to take it a step further, you could also have them go out monthly. It’s a good opportunity to teach them about how things might change with the seasons and how that impacts ecosystems as well.”
