March Madness 2025 scores, results: McNeese, Drake deliver upsets, break brackets on Day 1 of NCAA tournament

Day 1 of March Madness is in the books, and there were two notable upsets.

No. 12 McNeese provided the first big stunner of the NCAA men’s tournament on Thursday afternoon, stifling No. 5 Clemson for an embarrassingly low 13 points in the first half and then holding on for a 69-67 win. No. 11 Drake then followed that with an upset over No. 6 Missouri for its first tournament win in 54 years. (Track all of the 2025 NCAA tournament upsets here.)

In other news, St. John’s and Arkansas both advanced with wins on Thursday to set up a Hall of Fame coaching clash between Rick Pitino and John Calipari in the Round of 32 on Saturday. • Texas Tech trying to wrap up a victory

Tech leads 81-70 with 1:08 to go. Barring a miracle, the Red Raiders are looking good to avoid a major upset.

  • Texas Tech up 9

Texas Tech’s lead is up to nine with just 3:32 left. The Red Raiders are trying to fend off UNC Wilmington and set up a Saturday matchup with Drake.

  • Another look at the final seconds of Michigan’s win over UCSD

  • Texas Tech clinging to lead

The Red Raiders are in a battle late in the second half, but an and-one from Christian Anderson gave them a five-point lead with about 8:30 left in the final game of the night. UNC Wilmington is trying to pull off what would be the biggest upset of the day.

  • Final: Michigan 68, UC San Diego 65

Michigan survives! UCSD had a shot to tie it in the final seconds but it hit back iron and missed. A valiant comeback bid falls just short for a team in its first-ever Division I NCAA tournament.

  • UCSD is coming!

The Tritons briefly tied it up and are now within one, 66-65, against Michigan. Could we finish the night with two upsets?

  • Seahawks on top

Nolan Hodge just drilled a huge 3-pointer to give the Seahawks their first lead since the opening minutes. They’re up 46-45 now, and attempting to pull off the biggest upset of the day.

  • Final: St. John’s 83, Omaha 53

St. John’s started slow but blitzed to the end. That officially set up a matchup between St. John’s coach Rick Pitino against Arkansas’ John Calipari in the 2nd round.

  • Texas Tech-UNC Wilmington tied up

Just minutes into the second half, we’ve got a tie game in Wichita. The winner of this game will get Drake in the second round on Saturday.

  • UC San Diego making moves

The Tritons are in the middle of a 12-0 run, and a 15-4 run to start the second half. They’ve suddenly got a one-possession game with Michigan early in the second half.

  • Halftime: Texas Tech 38, UNC-Wilmington 34

This game got more interesting than expected. UNC-Wilmington finished the first half on a 15-3 run and is within striking distance of the Red Raiders. Texas Tech’s Kerwin Walton leads all scorers with 15 points.

  • Johnnies running away

St. John’s has fully shaken off a sluggish start. Now pulling away from Omaha with a 60-36 edge midway through the 2nd half.

  • Final: UCLA 72, Utah State 47

And it’s over. Utah State’s offense had nothing against UCLA and the result was a double-digit deficit for the entire second half. Seven different UCLA players scored between seven and 14 points, and they had assists on 22 of their 26 field goals. A great day on both sides of the ball for the Bruins.

They’ll face No. 2 Tennessee in the second round.

  • Big surge for St. John’s

The Johnnies open the 2nd half on a 10-2 scoring spurt to open a 43-30 lead.

Suddenly, Omaha’s early upset hopes are fading.

  • Halftime: Michigan 41, UC San Diego 27

The Wolverines are in control of this one early. They opened the game on a 10-0 run and have led the entire way while the Tritons shot just 2-of-15 from deep.

  • Halftime: St. John’s 33, Omaha 28

The Red Storm weathered the Omaha … storm early in the game to take a mild lead into the locker room. Neither team is shooting particularly well. Can St. John’s pull away?

  • UCLA leads Utah State by 23

There might not be much more to say about this game. Utah State’s offense is still sputtering (3-of-24 on 3-pointers) and UCLA has its biggest lead of the night, with 14 points from Skyy Clark. The Bruins have assists on 19 of their 22 field goals tonight.

  • Utah State breaks enormous 3-point drought

Utah State missed 18 straight 3-pointers before Isaac Johnson finally sank one with 15:25 left in the second half. UCLA still leads them 53-36.
