ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WITN)—As temperatures begin to rise, Safe Kids Onslow County wants to remind you of the dangers of leaving a child in a hot car.
Safe Kids Onslow County recently received a grant to update its hot car display, which helps raise awareness of the dangers of leaving children in hot cars.
The county says last year at least 39 children across the country died from heatstroke while left alone in a car.
On an 80-degree day, a car’s temperature can rise by 20 degrees in just 10 minutes.
Children are at higher risk for heatstroke, heating up three to five times faster than adults and an internal temperature of 104 degrees can lead to organ failure, while 107 degrees can be deadly, Safe Kids says.
Safe Kids says to remember ACT:
A: Avoid heatstroke by never leaving your child alone in a car, even for a moment. Keep your car locked when not in use.
C: Create reminders by placing something you need at your destination next to your child in the backseat, like a briefcase or cell phone, especially if your routine changes.
T: Take action! If you see a child alone in a car, call 911. Your call could save a life.
Safe Kids says the hot car display will be set up twice a month at community events or as a stationary display until September.
Upcoming displays:
- April 7th: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Richard Ray Park as part of Week of the Young Child events
- April 11th: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Hubert Bypass Park as part of Week of the Young Child events
- April 26th: Operation Medicine Drop, location TBD
- May 3rd: Jacksonville Jamboree
