TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center (KDCD) is celebrating spring break in a way only it can.
“So every day during Spring Break, we’ve been doing science programs from 10 am to 4 pm,” said Laura Burton, the Director of Marketing at the KDCD. “Today, we’re doing a little bit of train building. Tomorrow we’ll be doing some bridge engineering. The day after, we’ll be building some circuits together. Lots of fun science stuff to keep that learning going during spring break.”
The theme of the day seemed to be trains, with a Thomas the Tank Engine exhibit and the aforementioned train-building workshop. There was even a train march around the building.
“Every day at 11:00, of course, a train parade, where the kiddos get to walk around dressed as trains, make train sounds, and have lots of fun,” said Burton.
The festivities went beyond just having fun and were about the connections strengthened by spending time together.
“There’s a lot to do, and my favorite is just spending time with family,” said Kaleah Bryant, a kid enjoying the day at the Discovery Center.
“‘Cause you get to spend more time with your friends and families,” said another attendee.
All the family-friendly fun helps to build young minds during the break.
“We’re all about play-based learning and everything that kids can do here is educational. So they’re having fun, but they’re also experimenting, they’re being creative. They’re learning new things and it’s a nice way to sneak in a little bit of learning as they’re enjoying themselves.”
That’s not the only thing the center is building.
“That’s our Building Discovery project. We’re doubling the size of our museum. That will be open in the fall. The full museum is currently open for play, so when folks come, they’ll have to see trucks and cranes and beams and fun things like that. That’s enhancing the experience for visitors, but everything here at the museum is open through construction and there’s a lot here to enjoy.”
Tomorrow is the third Thursday of the month, and the center offers free admission between 5 and 8 p.m.
