After previewing last October, Google Wallet will soon let supervised kids access NFC tap-to-pay on Android phones. Google announced it alongside the Pixel 9a today.
This Google Wallet for kids experience is integrated with Family Link. It can be used for payments in (physical) stores, while the Wallet app can also store event tickets, gift cards, library cards, and other supported passes. Any card added will not work for online Google Pay transactions, while IDs, health cards, and other private passes are not supported at launch.
Parents must enter their Google Account password in-person before a credit or debit card can be added, while payment methods can be removed remotely. There’s also the option to disable the pass capability entirely. They will “receive an email whenever their child makes a transaction” and can see recent purchases in Family Link.
As always, a device PIN, password, fingerprint, or facial recognition is needed to authenticate NFC payments.
This is officially rolling out over the coming weeks in the US, UK, Spain, Poland, and Australia. It’s launching with the Pixel 9a starting today.
The Fitbit Ace LTE from last year was the first kids device with Google Wallet access. Last month, Google announced a redesign of the Family Link app, School Time on Android phones, and other kid-friendly features.
