TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A local advocate for kids living with Type One diabetes continues his mission to give them experiences all kids enjoy.
Kent Schnakenberg visited Eye on NE Kansas with Kain, a young man from Topeka who is living with Type One diabetes.
Kent has long used his love for long-distance bicycling to raise awareness for Type One diabetes and advocating for improving the lives of those who live with the disease. He said he was inspired by his niece, when she was diagnosed.
One way Team Schnak supports the younger patients is by raising money to provide scholarships to attend Camp Discovery and Sweet Betes Kansas. The camp is designed especially for children living with diabetes, giving them a fun experience along with education, all overseen by appropriate medical staff.
Kain shared how much the experience has helped him. He was diagnosed with Type One diabetes three years ago, and said it changed how he approaches a slate of activities that includes track and wrestling. He said being around other kids who understood the daily challenges was a helpful experience.
