BRADENTON, Fla. (WWSB) – Bracketology on the Suncoast looks a little different, but that doesn’t mean it’s not competitive. Molchany’s Madness at Nolan Middle School in Bradenton gives 6th graders the chance to compete against their peers in a tournament based on numbers.
The winning trophy is up there with the best. It is 6 feet tall!
Damien Molchany, math teacher says, “It’s elaborate, but I feel like that’s my style. I’m always going to be a little elaborate with this thing.”Just like in the regular season of basketball, the students earn points for seeding.
Keiton Duggin, 6th grader, says “I’ve been doing all of the quizzes ever since the competitions started. I wasn’t on the board for the first few weeks, but after finally trying a little bit harder and using my power ups on each of them I finally got enough points to make it up there.”
Wesley Pies has a number 1 next to his name. He has earned himself a spot in the history books already with 500 regular season points.
Pies says, “Coming up in the last week I was so scared. I knew I was super close to the 500 club, and I was really scared if I was going to make it or not. I managed to do it.”
Anything can happen. Expect the unexpected.
Molchany says, “It’s really about your commitment level and how much you want to win. There have been kids that have been super great regular season players that get in the tournament and match up against someone that might have been laying in the weeds. They end up springing the upset and the kids will lose their minds when that happens.”
Tip off or math off, the tournament has begun.
We will see who can earn the prized title of Molchany Madness champion.
