BLOOMFIELD, Conn. (WFSB) — Lawmakers are set to speak out on Monday about “drastic cuts” to vital food assistance programs, which could impact thousands of residents across the state.
The proposed cuts, from the Trump administration, would affect two key food assistance programs in Connecticut.
The programs serve the one in eight residents facing food insecurity and local farmers depend on this funding.
Connecticut Foodshare has stated that the state is set to lose $3.7 million in funding for the “Local Food Purchase Assistance Program.”
This would impact 516 food distribution locations that source their goods from 131 farms and producers across Connecticut. Additionally, the “Local Food for Schools Program” could lose $5 million in funding, which helps schools and child care facilities purchase food from nearby farms.
In response to these proposed cuts, Connecticut Foodshare has called on Governor Ned Lamont to support a bipartisan bill that would fully fund the Connecticut Nutrition Assistance Program (CTNAP) with $10 million in state funding.
Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy are scheduled to speak at 10:15 a.m. on Monday to address the impact of the cuts and the importance of protecting these food assistance programs.
