Don’t Waste Your Appetite: Louisiana Foodies & Cruise Ships

SHREVEPORT, LA – I recently went on a lovely cruise from Los Angeles to Puerta Vallarta, Mexico. We stopped at Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán and PV. As you know, the food available on cruise ships is unbelievable. You have a full buffet spread open almost 24 hours a day. You also have a dining room where some amazing delicacies are served. You will also find several spots around the ship offering food free to guests around the clock.

My recent sailing was a poker cruise, so I would often be dining at irregular hours. During those times, I ventured to the buffet to find so many choices. But I did discover something that I will never forget. If you are from Louisiana, there are some foods you should not try while on a cruise.

What Foods You Should Not Eat on a Cruise if You Are from Louisiana?

I spotted shrimp creole on the buffet. There was a line to get this shrimp dish so I thought, why not? I should have asked myself WHY? This was so bland and tasted like shrimp tossed in ketchup. There was no Cajun flavoring or spices. This dish had no hint of the shrimp creole we typically eat in Louisiana.

Another thing you should avoid on a cruise ship is blackened fish, specifically redfish. It’s just not going to come close to how it’s prepared in the Bayou State.

I didn’t see any on my cruise ship, but don’t ever try crawfish on a cruise ship. It’s just not going to be what you expect. And it actually might be crawfish from China (I hope not).

Most of the shrimp dishes on the buffet are also very bland. If you really want shrimp, you might want to try one of the specialty seafood restaurants onboard the ship.

I would also avoid any cruise ship offering of gumbo. It’s just never going to measure up.

Steer clear of any dishes that are labelled as “Cajun” or “Creole”. The execution of these dishes will not likely be close to any kind of authentic Cajun or Creole food.

Desserts Louisiana Residents Should Avoid on Cruise Ship

I tried the creme brulee and it was ok, but not what I usually find in Louisiana. You also probably want to avoid the bread pudding and the pecan pie. It just won’t compare to the Louisiana version.

And an overall rule is to be a little choosy at those buffet offerings. Pigging out every day can lead to overindulgence and a feeling of being overwhelmed. Instead, select quality food offerings rather than piling up your plate with everything that catches your eye.
